This research project was aimed at investigating the utilization of computer
software in the teaching and learning of English language in selected secondary schools in
Ibadan. It is an empirical research that is complemented with series of literature
consultation, data collection and analysis including recommendations on how computer
software are utilized to enhance effective teaching and learning of English language. Fifty
English Language teachers were randomly selected from Four local governments in
Ibadan. A self constructed questionnaire on the utilization of computer software in the
teaching and learning of English language in secondary schools was used to gather data.
The data generated were analyzed using frequency counts and percentage scores. It was
found that teachers have been making use of available computer software in their teaching
process as little as they can while some computer software that are also needed are not
accessible and provisions are not made for them. Due to this situation and lack of
motivation, training and provision for teachers from the appropriate quarters, teachers
have been using the available computer software for other purposes than teaching. Based
on these findings, some recommendations which include the provision of suitable
computer software for teachers, adequate training and motivation for teachers, provision
of equipment and amenities in schools including proper encouragement for teachers and
students on adequate utilization of computer software in the teaching and learning of
English language were made.
