ABSTRACT
The study assesses the effect of Boko Haram incessant attacks and crisis on the development of Nigeria. The terrorizing effect of the activities of the fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram on the socio-economic condition of the country has become so devastating that some financial institutions, companies and other business ventures have closed down in many areas, thereby causing relocation of non-indigenes and indigenes alike to other states. It is based on the above that this paper seeks to find out the extent the Boko Haram insurgency has affected the socio-economic development of Nigeria. During the course of the study, it was discovered that the insecurity situation in the country was so tense that even the indigenes have started to send their children and wards to some parts of the country for their education.
Using a descriptive-analytical approach, this paper examines the security challenges Nigeria faces from insurgency and the impact of this on national peace, security and sovereignty. The study shows that the frequency of insurgent attacks has resulted in collateral damage on the peace, stability, development and sovereignty of the state. It finds also that the federal government has not been decisive enough. These place urgent and decisive demand on the government to adopt new management strategy that will address and contain the insurgent and terrorist groups. Specifically, it also provides a better understanding of the dominant insurgent group the Boko Haram sect and the effects of violence and insurgency on the oneness of the Nigerian State. It also suggests possible solutions, which include traditional conflict resolution approaches to curb the menace of violent extremism and insurgency in Nigeria.
