ABSTRACT


This research assessed the utilization of non-formal education programmes for socio-economic development in Oredo local government area of Edo state and it looked at the history of these programmes in Nigeria. The researcher made a review of some related literature relating to the topic of the research work to give some fact of what other scholars have written. 


A questionnaire title the assessment of the utilization of non-formal education programme for socio-economic development was designed and administer to 100 respondent who were randomly selected from the various non-formal education progrmmes in the area. Questions were asked to elicit responses on the utilization of non-formal education programmes for socio-economic development in the local government area, from the data gathered it was found out that there are various non-formal education programmes in Oredo local government area but skill acquisition programme is more than the others. Also a good proportion of the total population of the citizens in Oredo local government area of Edo state are involved in non-formal education programme. Again the people in Oredo local government area has utilized the available non-formal education programmes in their area to a high extent. Furthermore, the perception of the people in Oredo local government area toward non-formal education programme is positive and that non-formal education programme has been utilized in the following areas: empowering of school dropout, for youth empowerment and political enlightenment in the local government area.


Based on this findings from the study the researcher made a number of suggestions to increase the utilization of non-formal education programmes in the area.
