Having been appointed by the Ministry of Education and posted to one of the primary schools in this area of study ten years ago, I have made several observations. The one which has posed a great concern is the over enrolment of pupils in the Standard Seven classes in the majority of the Primary Schools. As compared to the rest of the classes, the class in reference leads in enrolment. The amateur observations carried out indicate the majority of the pupils are repeaters. Few are promoted from Standard Six raising the roll in Seven while few are also promoted to Standard Eight. This implies that with time, consequently, piles of pupils comprising of varied ages, academic abilities, and different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds are realized. It is also likely, as it has been in the past, that those performing badly in National Examination are returned to Standard Seven. Others will either repeat in the same school for proper re-organization or seek admission elsewhere. Thus, enrolment will be kept at maximum of plus or minus ten of the highest number each year. Causes of this enrolment among the few highlighted are yet to be investigated and subjected to test ifthey will affect the pupil’s academic performance
